Charis had her first softball game last night. I feel like we're entering a new era with her if this ends up sticking and she continues to play softball for a while. So far she loves it, and it was so much fun to see her excitement as she went through her first game.
I've watched some college softball before, living in a college town it's hard to get away with never watching it at some point. But beyond that, I've never really followed it, nor known all that much about it. I was honestly a little surprised at how challenging it was to follow all of the rules that are unique to the sport for her age group. It was hard to keep track of.
A couple of the interesting ones to me were: it's player pitch, with "coach fallback" I guess is the best way to put it. The player pitches, but if/when she throws four balls (not strikes), the coach takes over, and when he does, the batter gets three pitches, and one strike. I had trouble at first understanding how and when it was decided that the coach would go in and pitch. I never could make sense of it myself, I had to ask someone that knew what they were talking about, haha.
Also seems they limit teams to only 5 runs per inning. If they score 5 runs, regardless of how many outs there are, the teams automatically switch. I think there's an exception here for the last/third inning? There's no limit then? Also, it seems there's no tie allowed. Teams play until one team wins, scoring more runs and stopping the other from tying or winning. I think that's right?
The game went longer than I expected. It went almost two full hours. Long night for a little girl that was tuckered out by the time it was all said and done. But she had a great time. We've got some work to do with her, but I expect it'll be a fun ride.
Great job Charis! Love ya girl!
