The Screwtape Letters @ Faith Promise

  • Whoever shapes what we love, shapes where our whole life goes.

  • 1 John 2:15-17

  • v16 - "desires" ... the CSB uses the term "lust" here ... kinda changes the tone of the message here a little bit.

  • "pride" -

  • "greed" - the idea that more will finally be enough.

  • "envy" - turns blessing into bitterness.

  • Galatians 5:19-21

  • "The desires (lusts) of the flesh are evident ..."

  • Genesis 3:6

  • Luke 4:1-13 - Jesus' temptation

  • Flesh, eyes, pride of life. The lusts of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.

  • All of the things that we love and desire, were given to us by God. It's part of how he made us. How we're designed ...

  • But the enemy twists it ... redirects it ... changes the object of our desires.

  • Galatians 5:16 - walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

  • What does it look like, in practice, to "walk by the Spirit"??

  • Stay connected - John 15:1-27 - I think this might have something to do with that question above.

  • Are you spending time in the presence of God??

  • How do we take more steps in the Spirit??

    • Name the desire

    • Cut off what's feeding it

      • Sometimes this can be as sole as getting to a place where we can be quiet with God, so we can hear His voice.

    • Arm yourself for the battle (Ephesians 6:10-18)

      • James 4:10 (pride of life)
