Oregon fired Drew Mehringer
I saw on X a little bit ago that Oregon has fired offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer. I have mildly mixed feelings on this. I don’t know the guys personally, nor have I ever seen a single interview with him. I know nothing of and can’t speak to his character at all. I never take pleasure in seeing someone lose their job, though I’m sure it hurts much less for someone that’s making millions to do what they do, so …
On the other hand, this absolutely needed to happen, and I’m glad to see Lanning finally making this decision. Personally I feel it’s overdue, but I can also understand the delay as well. But man, Oregon’s offense has been painfully bad and hard to watch so far this season. I’ve heard it said this year that Oregon has their deepest and most talented roster ever this season. With Dante Moore coming back, Evan Stewart being healthy again, Dakorien Moore, Jalen Lott, Messiah Hampton, Davison, Hill … I could go on. But given the weapons that guy had at his disposal, there’s just absolutely no excuse for this offense to have struggled the way it has this season.
I’ve long believed that preseason rankings are dumb and can’t be trusted, but they are admittedly assigned to teams by the media for reasons. Oregon was preseason #2 in the country. I am of the opinion that Mehringer is largely why they’re now unranked. Yes, the loss of Dante Moore hurt, but even still. Just based on how he played at the end of the USC game Dylan Raiola should be more than serviceable. He’s not been great, and I’m not convinced that’s all on him.
The challenge now will be attempting to keep players, as many as we practically can, out of the transfer portal when the season is over. Still a ton of talent there. Who can Oregon bring in to turn this offense around? That will be interesting to watch.
